Cardiff Host Top Tournaments

For the next two weekends the Welsh Institute of Wales in Cardiff will be hosting two of the Top Tournaments in Wales.


On 27th/28th February the British Grand Prix season comes to Cardiff for the Travel City Cardiff Satelite Open. Irelands Paul McCreery enters as Number 1 Seed for the Mens Open with Welsh number 3 Stephen Jenkins entering as number 2 Seed, Some Top welsh players are also in the mix with Patrick Thomas, Steven Gertsen and Nathan Thomas looking to cause some upsets in the tournament. Wales Chinese practise partner Yongbe Zhang is also in the mix roaming around with a dummy ranking.
In the Womens Open Naomi Owen leads the way for Wales as Number 1 Seed followed by Irelands Number 1 Na Liu looking to take the Women Title. Ireland Amanda Mogey and England Emma Vickers complete the top four seedings for the Womens Event.


Saturday 6th March
The Welsh Junior Closed takes place at the Welsh Institue of Sport. Welsh Junior Number one Daniel OConnell leads the field in the Junior boys event with Lewis Williams, Lee Morgan, Josh Jenkins and Cameron Thomas looking to capture the Welsh Junior Title.
The Junior girls event is the more open event where the winner could come from a number of welsh talented players, with Chloe Thomas, Charlotte Carey, Megan and Angharad Phillips, Hannah Avery, Natasha Rees and Nicole Hall all looking to take the Welsh Girls Junior Crown.


Sunday 7th March
The Main Events take place, Welsh Number 1 Adam Robertson will be strong favourite to take the Mens Title with Stephen Jenkins and Patrick Thomas looking to make a final showdown with the Welsh Number 1.
In the Womens event Naomi Owen looks strong favouritte to capture yet another Welsh title in a feild packed with Junior Welsh talent.

St.Mellons Table Tennis Festival

St.Mellons Table Tennis Club are linking up with Sport.Cardiff 5x60 Programme to run a Table Tennis Festival for local schools to come to the Table Tennis Club and take part in the fun filled sport.

Locals schools such as Rumney High, Llanrumney and St.Illtyds will be making the trip on Wednesday 3rd March at 4.00pm down to St.Mellons Community Centre and will have the chance to see Table Tennis played at a high level with South Wales Development Coach Simon Oyler leading the Festival accompanied by Wales National Coach an 9 Times Welsh Champion Ryan Jenkins.

On the day Simon and Ryan will be putting on an Exhibition and showing how table tennis is played, also there will be a bat skills workshop, structured coaching session, and small Competitions running for all participants to enjoy the competitive side of the sport.


The aim for this is to create a exit route and community link with the schools in order to give children in the local area the opportunity to take part in sport and create opportunities for them.

Cardiff Closed Championships

Cardiff and District Table Tennis League are going to be running their Cardiff Closed
Championships at the Welsh Institute Of Sport on Saturday 27th March 2010 in the Jubilee Hall.

Competitions on the day are-

Junior Championship - 9.30am
Veterans (over 40) - 9.30am
Veterans (over 55's) - 9.30am
Womens Championship - 9.30am
Open Championship - 1.00pm
Division 2/3 Open - 3.00pm
Handicap Competition - 3.00pm

Raining Champion Owen Clutterbuck is looking to win his 9th Cardiff Senior Title in what could be the strongest entry for year with players such as Nathan Thomas, Neil Wright, Nick Brown, Simon Oyler, Ceri James, Scott Cundy looking to spoil the party for the raining champion

There will also be a Hard Bat event held at the Welsh Institute of Sport on Thursday 15th April at 7.00pm

This event held some great matches last season with Nick Brown beating Owen Clutterbuck and Simon Oyler taking down Hard Bat King Neil Wright, Setting up an exciting final where Nick Brown took the title winning 31-26

TTAW Roadshow

A series of Table Tennis Roadshows will take place the week of the 19th April 2010 to bring table tennis to the people of Wales.
Dates:
Monday 19th & Tuesday 20th [Mid/North Wales]
Wednesday 21st - Welsh Primary Schools Championships
Thursday 22nd & Friday 23rd [South East/West Wales]

The national coach, plus the 3 regional coaches, will take a van with a table tennis table around primary and secondary schools, plus clubs in Wales to show people what real table tennis is all about.

Half Term Training Camps

Cathays Table Tennis Academy Head Coach Simon Oyler will be holding training camps during the half term break. They are being held at Cathays High School for School pupils and academy players to attend.

These camps are held on Wednesday 17th February and Friday 19th February from 10am-2pm,
There will be 8 tables at the training camps so we have plenty of space for you all, so please feel
free to attend and get some extra practise in over the half term break.

On Saturday 20th February Cathays are holding their Community Club from 10am-12pm

National Coach Ryan Jenkins will be in attendance along with South Wales Development coach Simon
Oyler and Welsh Squad players, so please feel free to come along and practise with these players learn
new skills and improve your game to the next level.

Talent ID Open day

For those who run clubs around Wales and have talent that may not get recognised as you would like, National Coach Ryan Jenkins has decided to run 3 'Open nights' so that all clubs have the chance to showcase their talented youngsters for the future.

The players you bring along should not be in a current TTAW run session [COE, TTAW squads] or in a TTAW run competition [Team Championships of Wales]. Players age limit is 15 years old.

May 4th - South East Wales [Welsh Institute of Sport] 5-8pm
May 5th - North Wales [Clywedog] 6-9pm
May 6th - South West Wales [Carmarthen] 7-10pm

No registration is needed - just turn up and play.....

Newport Junior Open 2010

The Newport Junior Open took place at the Newport Velodrome Sports Complex on Sunday 7th February 2010

Under 13's
Boys Event. After losing his first match to the growing talent of Chris Griffiths in a closley fought 5 set match, Ryan Oyler bounced back to take down Stefan Jaczalik 3-0, followed by Chris going down to Stefan 3-0, this ment that Ryan and Stefan went through on count back.
Ryan got through some close 5 set matches to reach the final where he faced Centre of Excellence squad mate Liam Winders, both players played some good stuff but it was Ryan who came out on top in the 5th set to regain his Newport Under 13's Title for the 2nd Year.

Girls Event. Beth Roberts won the Under 13's event beating Cardiff Centre of Excellence Squad member Laura Edwards in close sets.

Clean Sweep At Welsh Dragon Grand Prix

In the 5th and last round of the Welsh Dragon Grand prix event it was Jac and Soffi Jenkins who took home the titles.

Soffi Jenkins took the Under 11's title by beating Ferndale Primary Star Charlotte Slye to take the last Under 11's event of the season.

In the Under 15's event there was some great table tennis played, but it was Jac Jenkins who came out on top to win the title by beating Tom Goodall and Dylan Bruford in the final group, with Tom Goodall of Cathays Academy finishing 2nd and Dylan Bruford the talented youngster from Ferndale TTk finishing in 3rd position. Cardiff Centre of Excellence squad member Catlin Williams took the highest girls spot finishing 4th.

In the Under 13's it was Jac Jenkins and Dylan Bruford reaching the top group to battle it out for top spot, after a nervous match which swung both ways, it was Jac Jenkins who took his second title of the day by winning 11-9 in the 5th set. Dylan Bruford took 2nd place followed by Ferndale Team mate Dylan Lewis finishing 3rd. Caitlin also took the highest girls spot in the Under 13's finishing 7th with Under 11's Champion Soffi Jenkins taking 8th spot.

There was also some great results for Cathays Academy players to take home, with Haneef Faithal finishing highest in the Under 13's

Cathays Take Victory At Team Championships of Wales

On Saturday 6th February Cathays Table Tennis Academy took to the courts for the 3rd round of the Team Championships of Wales at the Welsh Institute of Sport.

In the First match of the day Cathays went up against Greenhouse Tonypandy in the top of the table clash,
it was Cathays that came out flying with Kongchun beating an injuried Naomi James in four games, Cathays
Number one then took on Rob Tyler and gave Cathays a 2-0 lead. Callum pulled a game back for
Tonypandy by beating Kian Emadi. The doubles was a closely fought match but Cathays came out on top in
4 games. Tom Goodall then rapped up the win for Cathays by beating Naomi. Tonypandy won the last two
matches to make the final score 4-3 to Cathays Academy,

Cathays then faced Newport and proved to be to strong with Tom Goodall and Inthyarayat Kongchun
winning both of their two their singles matches, Emmanuel found the going tough and lost his two games in close sets.
Tom teamed up with Kian in the doubles an took victory in 5 close sets. Cahtyas coming out on top winning 5-2.

Cathays are now sitting equal top with Tonypandy with points difference keeping the two team apart.

Cathays Academy players will be looking to take there form into the Dragon event held at the
Welsh Institute of Sport on Sunday 7th February with 4 players entered in under 13s and 1 entry in the
Under 15's Catergory

Welsh Players impress at Cippenham Festival

Some great results from Welsh players at the Cippenham tournament this weekend. Chris Griffiths won the U14 event beating Vince from London 3-0 in the final. Vince happened to beat another Welsh star (who has just been selected for the 6 nations in Scotland) Conor Edwards 1-3 in the semi final.
