Pontypridd Summer Open

The Pontypridd Open took place today at Pontypridd High School and proved to be a good tournament with some great rallies and some shock results.

The beginners tournament was won by Pontypridd player Callum Griffiths after beating Carmarthen Star Lawrance John in the deciding game, Huw Standen and Alaisdair Weir of Whitchurch H.S Academy finished 3rd and 4th with Ayman Alkateeb taking 5th place followed by MacCauley Morgan making up the top 6 of 10 players in the beginners.

Band 1 event went to Callum Evans who beat Jac Jenkins in a battle in a epic final showdown (A replay of the Welsh Closed where Jac came out on top)

The Main Open event proved to have a few shock results and some great matches. Callum Evans continued his form by beating Under 15's and 18's Welsh Champion Conor Edwards in his group, Cardiff Based Player Ryan Oyler won in a tight and edgy 5 set match against Cameron Thomas to top the Group, Conor recovered well and almost made the shock of the tournament after being 2-1 up on Top Seed Micheal Marsden, Mike stepped up his play but Conor continued to battle and lost 11-8 in the 5th set. Ethan Davies pulled out some great table tennis on his return to the game and beat Ryan Oyler in a 4 set match then lost out to Mike Marsden after taking the first end.
Marsden then picked up his level and beat Ryan Owen in a 4 set thiller which had some great shots and fantastic rallies.

A big thank you goes to Jonathan Gregory who did a great job running the day!!
