Winners at first Dragon of the Season
The 1st Dragon of the season took place on Sunday 9th of October in the main hall at the National Centre Sophia Gardens. As usual many were playing in their first tournament and it was a real thrill for these new players to be playing in the same hall as the best juniors in Wales who were contesting Junior Team Championships.
The under 11s group with 10 entries got underway at 9am together with the older under 15s. It was great to see the new players and parents and some impressive playing followed. Whitchurch Academy players coached by Simon Oyler dominated the under 15s event with Hugh Standen securing the win in a close battle against newcomer and surprise of the under 15s Jack Fletcher. The under 11s saw players from all over the south region taking part, just missing out on a trophy finishing 3rd was Cade Short, runner up was Luca Caplin and the winner was Joseph Roberts. A special mention goes to highest finishing female player Lydia John who finished in 4th place overall.
The under 13s started as usual at 1pm and a few keen under 11 entrants had a go at the older age group, thereby making the most of their trip to Cardiff. Incredibly 3 players claimed top honours all on 4 wins each in the final group. The organisers had to revert to counting sets and the final top 3 were; 3rd John Clarke, 2nd Joseph Roberts and the winner was Elliot Weinberg. This result shows how close the competition is the Dragons and the importance of trying to win every point. The next Dragon will take place on Sunday 20th of November 2011, again in the main hall at the National Centre so be sure to get your entry forms sent off early.
