Burton Uxbridge 1* Star Open

On Saturday 8th June four regional players from Cardiff made the trip to Burton for the 1* Star Open, They where accompanied by other welsh players such as Cade Short, Louie Evans, Mithun Abhan and Anna Hursey.

After the over night stay in Derby on Saturday the team travelled onto Burton to compete against some tough English opponents.

Sunday 9th June saw the tournament get underway.
Up first was the Cadet Open, In a tough group Joshua Stacey upset all the odds to win his group beating some tough opponents on the way, Macauley also qualified through his group whilst Huw Standen lost out in the 3 way tie for first place. In the next round Macauley lost out to the runner up in Joshua Stacey's group whilst Joshua progressed through to the Quarter-finals where he lost out 3-1 to a strong english opponent. Joseph Roberts progressed through his under 11's group without dropping a set and continued his form up to the semi finals where he lost out to T W Chen 3-1.

For Macauley and Huw it was the junior event up next where they both had some good results, both players qualified to the quarter finals where they lost out to the eventual finalist. The under 13's was next up for Joshua and Joseph, both players qualified through their groups. Joshua Stacey upsetting all the odds again by beating TW Chen and Charlie Hendrix in his group 3-0. Joseph Roberts brushed passed his opponents without losing a set. Both players won their first and second round matches which set up a Quarter Final showdown where they had to play each other, Joshua Stacey took the 1st set 11-6 but Joseph quickly found his way back into the game winning the next 11-4, from this point on there was no looking back for Joseph as he seemed to go through the gears and control the match, eventually running out a 3-1 winner over team match Joshua Stacey. Joseph then went up against Joey Chen, who in the previous round had beaten fellow Welshman Cade Short. Joseph gave all he could but in each set at 8-8 found Joey to strong and lost 11-8 11-9 12-10 to the eventual winner.

In the girls under 13's Anna Hursey gave a great account of herself by reaching the Semi-finals, which at 6 years old is a great achievement. Anna Hursey has also just moved into the South Region and will be looking to be part of the South Regional Squads for next season.

All the welsh players gave good accounts of themselves and showed just how much they are improving along with their hard work and determination to succeed.

Joshua Stacey gets his call up

Joshua Stacey who attends Rumney high school took up table tennis in December 2011 after watching some of his friends enjoy a lunch club activity with regional coach Simon Oyler. Joshua then decided to give it a go and has never looked back since.

He now trains more than 10 hours per week and plays for his local club St.Mellons TTC. Josh is also part of the Cardiff Regional Squad.

In March he competed in his first Welsh National Championships and pulled of some great wins over players his age who have played table tennis for more than 3 years. The next step for Joshua was the Under 13's National Championships in which he lost to team mate Joseph Roberts in a thrilling semi-final match. Although he lost in the semi-finals Joshua had some great wins over Harry Langley and Cade Short who went onto win the tournament after losing to Josh in the group stage. Joshua then had some more great wins in the Junior Team Championships of Wales over Charlotte Slye and former Welsh player Ashley Perry, he also lost just lost out in the deciding set to a few other welsh players who are a few years older than him.

Joshua has been rewarded for his achievements by getting selected by Welsh National Coach Ryan Jenkins to represent his country at the Junior Luxembourg Open in June.

This is a massive event for Joshua and he will be looking forward to the experience and will look to improve and work hard leading up to the event.

He will be accompanied by: Lydia John, Laura Edwards, Callum Evans, Nicole Hall, Ryan Oyler
