Cardiff Junior & Cadet Open

For the second year in a row St.Mellons Table Tennis Club hosted the Cardiff Junior Cadet Open. This proved to be yet another successful Welsh ranking tournament with over 40 participants competing across three different categories for boy and girls.

Up first was the Cadet boys and girls. In the boys event 16 players participated and it came down to a final between the number 1 seed Jac Jenkins who beat Joshua Stacey in the semi final, against Marc Castro who got past the young Joseph Roberts in the second semi final. It was last years winner Jac Jenkins, who defended his title and took the glory by beating Marc 3-1 in a close and well fought final.  In the Cadet girls it was Victoria Brookes who managed to take the title by beating Bethany Brewer in a close fought match.

The Under 13s event came next. In the boys category it was a repeat of the Glamorgan Closed final, with Cade Short getting the better of Joseph Roberts for the second time in as many weeks. In the girls event there were some very close matches. Lauren Stacey overcame a tough semi final match against Bethany Brewer winning 3-2 whilst Jamie Lee Harley won her semi final against Lara Whitton. Lara Whitton managed to overcome Anna Hursey in her group to advance to the Semi Finals. This set up a final match between the local talent  Lauren Stacey going up against Jamie Lee Harley. In a match that had a lot of twists and turns. It was Jamie Lee Harley who came out on top 3-2 to claim top prize.

The Junior event was up next, with all the best Welsh players on show it was time for the older guys to battle it out.  In the boys event it was the local boy Ryan Oyler who took the glory and the prize money after beating Chris Griffiths in a high standard final match 3-1. Chris Griffiths caused a small upset in the semi finals beating Welsh Junior number 1 Conor Edwards 3-1, whilst Ryan overcame a good effort from Jac Jenkins.

In the Junior Girls event Charlotte Carey won her group with Kate Roberts going through as runner up, whilst in the second group it was Beth Roberts who overcame Laura Edwards to qualify top of the group on count- back followed by Soffi Jenkins as runner up. This set up the semi final matches where Charlotte overcame Soffi 3-0 and Beth took the same score line against Kate Roberts. The final saw Charlottes experience and high level of table tennis come through again Beth Roberts and ran out to win 3-0 and claim the top prize.

Well done to all the winners and also to all the players who took part in the Cardiff Junior Cadet Open.

We now turn our efforts to the North Gwent Junior and Cadet Open. Get your entry forms in!

Joshua Roberts trains with Zhang Yining

Last week the annual French Identification camp for children aged 8-11 took place in Fontaines near Lyon. The camp was mostly made up of the best French talent for this age group. The remainder of the participants were selected through the EuroKids programme and included players from Belgium, Czech Republic, Cyprus and Wales. Joseph Roberts was the participant selected to represent Wales at the training camp who travelled with coach Greg Price
Training commenced on Day 1 with the emphasis on improving techniques and maintaining a high level of consistency. The following day saw the arrival of two times Olympic and World Champion Zhang Yining. Day 2 focused on service practice and match preparation in readiness for the competition the following day
On Day 3 the competitions for each age category commenced with Zhang Yining observing the matches. Joseph Roberts participated in the boys’ 2003 age category. The standard of competition was very high. Joseph performed well throughout the day and finished 6th out of 8 players. However, this final position does not reflect how well he played on the day. Joseph had a number of very close battles including narrowly losing in three five set matches. On another day, Joseph might have finished in the top three positions
For the last three days of the camp, it was back to the hard work of training. On Day 4, each player was given the opportunity to have a 20 minute multiball session whilst receiving expert coaching analysis from Zhang Yining. This experience was invaluable to Joseph’s development. Zhang Yining assessed Joseph’s techniques and gave detailed feedback on areas in which Joseph can improve
On the last two days of the camp, players were given the opportunity to work on specific areas to develop identified by Zhang Yining. Specific multiball exercises were set by the coaches to work on improving these identified areas of each player’s game. Joseph Roberts worked hard in training to improve and work on the coaching tips given by Zhang Yining.
Overall, an excellent training camp and a worthwhile experience for the development of Joseph and Welsh table tennis.

Gemau Cymru - GOLD for East

The second day on Gemau Cymru brought a Gold and Bronze medal in the singles event for the East.

Macauley Morgan provided an upset in the boy singles. He overcame some tough matches and qualified through to the semi finals where he went up against Marc Castro. This game went the way of the Whitchurch player which sent him into the final. Liam Winders was the player waiting for him after he beat Macauley's east team mate Huw Standen in the other semi final.
In the final Liam raced to a 2-0 lead and found himself at match point up at 10-9, however Macauley continued to fight hard and eventually turned the set around to win 14-12. This seemed to give Macauley the edge as he took the 4th set 11-9. In the deciding 5th set Liam found himself up again at 8-6, but Macauley had other ideas and kept the pressure on to level at 8-8 with his two serves to come. Winning two big rallies, the Whitchurch player found himself 10-8 up with gold medal point. Unfortunately Liam served of which gave Macauley the match and the Gold medal. Huw Standen took the bronze medal whilst Joshua Stacey ended his very impressive weekend losing in the quarter finals to Liam Winder. Josh lost just three matches out of 12 during the course of the weekend.

In the girls singles, Buddog James gave a great account of herself as did her team mate, 9 year old Lauren Stacey who showed just how much she has improved over the past 6 months, Lauren is one to watch in the future.

The east team ended with 3 medals:

Joshua Stacey gets his call up

Joshua Stacey who attends Rumney high school took up table tennis in December 2011 after watching some of his friends enjoy a lunch club activity with regional coach Simon Oyler. Joshua then decided to give it a go and has never looked back since.

He now trains more than 10 hours per week and plays for his local club St.Mellons TTC. Josh is also part of the Cardiff Regional Squad.

In March he competed in his first Welsh National Championships and pulled of some great wins over players his age who have played table tennis for more than 3 years. The next step for Joshua was the Under 13's National Championships in which he lost to team mate Joseph Roberts in a thrilling semi-final match. Although he lost in the semi-finals Joshua had some great wins over Harry Langley and Cade Short who went onto win the tournament after losing to Josh in the group stage. Joshua then had some more great wins in the Junior Team Championships of Wales over Charlotte Slye and former Welsh player Ashley Perry, he also lost just lost out in the deciding set to a few other welsh players who are a few years older than him.

Two young talented Welsh players travelled to Slovakia to be taken through their paces by Head Coach Piotr Skierski of Poland along with the rest of the EuroKids Participants. Joseph Roberts of Cardiff and Lydia John of Swansea travelled with regional coach Simon Oyler accompanied by Dave John.
First stop was a training session at BATTS Table Tennis Club in London before the team headed out to Slovakia from London Stansted.
Day one of the EuroKids Training Camp brought the EuroKids Tournament in which the standard of the matches where very high, Lydia and Joseph played some outstanding table tennis and managed to get some wins under their belt. Lydia qualified for the Top 16, whilst Joseph just fell outside the top 16 losing two matches in the deciding set which would have put him into the top 16 bracket.
Day two saw the completion of the tournament which Lydia finished in 16th place after losing 3 matches in the 5th set. Joseph Roberts also lost 3 matches in the 5th set and finished in 19th place. Both players showed great determination and showed their abilities to play and compete against the best in Europe.
Once the tournament was over it was then down to the hard work in the training hall, both players worked very hard and over the next few days of the training camp it proved a huge learning curve in the development of the players. Lydia seemed to improve with each session and took a lot of information from Head Coach Piotr Skierski. Welsh Primary Schools Championships Report

The Welsh Primary Schools Championships took place today the Sport Wales National Centre.

This event proved to be a great success with 36 teams entered, this was an increase from last year in which we had 24 teams entered. From the 36 teams who entered 15 teams where those from Cardiff primary schools with again is a big increase from last year where there was only 4 teams.

After a very enjoyable and fun packed day it came down to the final two teams to see who would take the title this year. Last year's runners up St.Marys Primary school who were fielding the same team of Joseph Roberts and Jack ODuffy went up against last year's winners Grange A of Swansea. This time it was the Cardiff based team who came out on top with a 55-24 win over last year winners.

This was a great achievement for St.Marys Primary School. School coach Derek Clarke said 'I am very happy to have players from the school winning this event, it has been a fantastic experience for our school players to play in such an event as this and hopefully each player has gained experience for the future.' Derek Clarke will now be looking to step aside as the school coach at the end of this school year as he would like to finally retire and take a back seat. We wish that all his hard work continues to have successes like this one and he will be deeply missed by the school and the players.

Another big achievement came from Llandaff City Primary School who finished in 5th position, considering they have only been playing since October this is a great achievement for the school and the players

After an early morning trip, it was Joseph Roberts who showed what he is capable of by winning all his matches in the Under 11's Round Robin group of 7 players to make up for his second place last time around. Joseph played extremely well and was very happy to win his first 1*Star title.

Macauley was the only player to get through both Junior and Cadet groups and lost in the quarter finals of both to the same player. Elliot Weinburg and Alasdair Wier lost out in both Junior and Cadet Groups on countback.

The young welsh superstar Joseph Roberts continued his form into the Under 13's event. Joseph won his group beating Sam Welsh to top spot. Joseph won his quater final match 3-0 to set up a semi-final showdown with the young and talented Joey Chen. Joseph started well in the first set but went down 11-9, the second set also went to the young chen 11-6. After being 2-0 down Joseph showed some great determination to try and get back into the game but it just wasn't to be on this occasion and lost out 13-11 in the 3rd set.

All the players showed great courage and determination to do their best at the tournament, it is now back to the training hall to put in more hard work to better ourselves next time around.

Congratulations to the Joseph Roberts who at 9 years old won his first Under 11s 1*Star title.

Josh Stacey (Left) and Benedict Watson (Right) fought it out for the Under 13's final in a repeat of January's final. It was Josh who again managed to pull off the victory with a very close 2-0 win, showcasing his ever improving game. With Josh now ineligible to play further Dragon tournaments after winning 2 this season Benedict must be one of the favourites for the next Dragon event in March. A big well done to all players involved in what was an enjoyable day.
